Forest City 2 Chapter 2 -Library-
The library was a common hangout for the shy introverted types. Considering that I came from a heavily rural area and grew up around a lot of farmers, I have never seen a library that practically takes up the entire street! Clove had mentioned coming to both of the libraries in Forest City, but like most of the citizens, she preferred the inner city one, unless she was looking for a romance novel, which I have no idea what she would do with that, well, read it of course. Clove was into more romance novels and Taiga culture, Taiga was a larger town outside of Jungle City and it held itself together with the long lost Jungle City culture that most of the residents would like to forget about. I didn't know too much about Jungle City and Taiga, but I heard they used to be one city before it split, due to the rich giving up on the poor and somehow, through the mist of chaos, Forest City sprang up and Jungle City forgot about the whole feud.
"Go tigers!" some jock shouted at the top of the stairs to the library. He wore a letterman jacket that was green and gold and had Jungle City High School Football Team written on the back. I sighed and walked past the jock, he clearly was only here in Forest City to advertise the big game on Friday. Considering that the dance was on Saturday, I felt a bit of anxiety rush to my head. I had an idea who I wanted to go to the dance with Cobalt, but he'd been blowing me off lately, maybe I'll just go alone instead or with-
"Why hello there, Macadamia," Monty's familiar voice spoke from behind me, "the library doesn't open for another 15 minutes, it's a Sunday and all."
We stood in awkward silence for a little while and I finally spoke up, "So, what's up with uh... you-know-who?"
"I'm not sure Mac," Monty replied, "Cobalt hasn't acted this way for a little while."
"A little while?" I echoed.
"When Cobalt started dating Bonnie, he made no effort to talk to us-"
"Us?"
"There were four of us at the time, one of them graduated and the other moved on, it's not that important."
"I'm more surprised that Cobalt had other friends," I said in awe.
"May I ask you something when we get inside?" Monty requested.
"I-I guess," I answered awkwardly. One of two thoughts ran in my head, either he was going to ask me to the dance or even worse, ask me about my stupid crush on stupid Cobalt.
We watched as Tora stomped his foot at the jock from Jungle City and shouted, "Clearly you haven't seen anything from us!" Most jocks from Forest City that you meet are super competitive about the sport they are playing or, like Jungle City jocks, are confident that they are going to win, but when met with a 6 foot 2 inch beefy tiger, could easily be snapped like a twig on the of a large branch.
"All in good sportsmanship man," the JC jock replied, "no harm dude." I could practically see the sweat running off of his forehead.
"Listen here, weasel, if I ever see you in Forest City territory again, I'm sending the pack after you," Tora threatened. I cringed.
The JC jock backed down and replied, "I'm only advertising the game, no really, I didn't mean any-"
Tora started with a push, the threw off his blue and gray letterman jacket, the JC jock proceeded to grab Tora's ankle, but was met with Tora's foot on the JC jock's face. A cheerleader wearing a green and gold uniform tried to push Tora off of the JC jock.
"Tora!" Monty called out, all eyes peered toward the small bird.
Tora proceeded to lift his foot of the JC jock, he backed down as well. I find it's ironic that Monty was able to strike so much fear into someone four times his size!
"How did you do that!?" I asked, Monty dragged me inside, the now open, library.
"One. Simple. Trick." Monty replied, "Tora knows that when I step in to back off, you see, there's a reason why I know a lot of students and there's a reason why most people listen to me."
"How so?" I asked.
"Well, I tend to be what some may call scary or fearful it's because of what I know about a lot of students, some may never notice me in the back of the class or walking right next to them in the hallway, but I know a lot through the gossiping that these students do," Monty answered, then gestured to a seat at the back of the library, "now come, sit down." He let out a menacing laugh and sat down in a spot that looked almost reserved for him. I always liked when Monty would over act everything, he seemed to really have a passion for acting, but he reserved it for Cobalt.
"So, what did you want to ask me," I said curiously.
"I wanted to ask you about Cobalt and... you," Monty began, I could tell he was struggling to find some words, "I'm not sure, but every single time you are around him, you look worried and anxious, your hand begin to shake is something wrong between you two... or is it that?"
"That!? You mean... we... um... I wanted to ask him... you know," I stuttered trying to pick up the words that I had dropped on the ground.
"Oh..." Monty said with a pause, "He... I don't know..."
"Monty... what happened with Cobalt and Bonnie?"
Another pause of silence came from Monty until he began telling me a different story than any of the other's I heard from a laptop that he had brought along with him.
Monty continues being the most interesting character by far. The position of being someone who borderline stalks other students to gain info on them out of a mix of curiosity and a love of people watching, but also consequently has dirt on everyone, and ALSO is feared by everyone because of having dirt on everyone--- I outright don't think I've read anything like this in fiction before. Would love to see this part of his character fleshed out further!
ReplyDeleteuh huh...yeah...I really did flesh him out some more...um...I hope you like how he develops
