Forest City 4 Chapter 16 -Quiet(ish) Night-
Monty and I made our way back to Aunt Hazel's house. We both sat down on the wooden stairs of the porch. Distant chatter came from inside the apartment. I glanced over to the streetlamp that lit up the sidewalk, the streetlamp itself looked so elegant behind the deep, blue sky. The warm glow of light basked on our backs from the tiny half circle window above the dark, wooden door. Monty straightened his glasses and glanced at me with his light emerald green eyes, they seemed soft and genuine.
"I feel like I have made everything worse for everyone and I don't know how to make up for it," Monty began and paused waiting for me to say something, he continued, "I wanted so badly to be a part of what you and Cobalt had. It all started out fine and dandy, but when you two started to date... I became extremely jealous and possessive over you and Cobalt." He fidgeted with his soft, pale feathers and continued, "I guess what I'm trying to say... is that I shouldn't have acted that way. I should have communicated more with Cobalt and you."
"I agree that there were some things that you did wrong, but it was fair in some weird way," I replied, "I think we all could have done something different."
"Cobalt didn't need to blow up like that, you know, at the library," Monty responded, "I shouldn't have given in to Bonnie-"
"And I shouldn't have been so ignorant to you and how you felt," I continued.
We both sat in silence for a little bit listening to the sirens in the distance. It was a quiet(ish) night in Forest City, dark clouds hardly hovered in the sky and the cold breeze didn't seem to bother us as much as it usually would.
"Shouldn't you kids be inside? Isn't it past your curfew?" An old voice croaked from across the fence.
Monty rose his arm, the one in the cast, and flashed a middle finger, but I'm sure Mr. Delgado couldn't see Monty's gesture.
I punched Monty in the forearm jokingly and said, "We should probably head inside." I got up and headed towards the door and looked back at Monty.
"Yeah, sure we should," Monty teased.
As we headed inside, mom rushed over to me and gave me a hug, I could tell that she was sorry with how she acted.
"Mac, your father and your mother have decided on something," Hazel began.
Dad began to grin showing his uneven buck teeth, he continued, "We want to stay here for the rest of break with you. It seems like we hardly know you and I'm sure you have a lot you would like to tell us about yourself. We want to understand you better and get to know you."
"What your father is trying to say is that he wants to take you out to eat," Mom reiterated what Dad had said.
Hazel, Dad, and Mom looked back at me for approval. I could tell a smile was on my face, practically saying yes.
