Forest City Chapter 7 -Detention-

"What's Bonnie's big deal with Cobalt," I asked Monty, it seems like lunchtime is the only part of the day that we didn't have Bonnie's green eyes glaring at us for talking about Cobalt.
"You heard her," Monty said then mocked Bonnie, "'You better stay away from him!' He's nothing, but trouble!'"
"Alright Bonty!" I teased, "I get it now!"
"She's pretty insecure about her whole fling with Cobalt."
"Why? She dated him for two years, then she cheated on him."
"Exactly, she blames Cobalt for all of her problems, she can't take any accountability for her own-"
"Man, you guys really do gossip as much as they say you do," Bonnie began.
I stood up, who does she think she is, following us around, commenting on every little thing we do.
"That will be enough of this Bonnie!" I heard a familiar voice from across the lunchroom. Cobalt!
Bonnie let out a snort of pettiness and whispered in my ear, "Looks like your Prince Charming is here."
I stared blankly into her eyes, "What makes you think you can act this way."
"You'll find out soon enough," Bonnie threatened and continued to make her way through the lunchroom, she sat down next to Toni, that same mouse from homeroom, and a jerky looking tiger wearing a varsity jacket that said, "Forest City High School Football Team."
"Why did you do that?" Monty asked Cobalt, Monty's face was full of shock and I had noticed that some of his feathers had began to puff up.
"Why aren't you standing up for yourself?" I asked curiously.
"It really isn't that easy for a bird like him," Cobalt answered, "Some birds, in Monty's case, small birds, have smaller, weaker, bones."
"I see now, so, Monty is completely defenseless," I replied.
"Mac," Cobalt said, he put his hand on my shoulder, "Let me take the blame for everything, don't even try to stand up to Bonnie."
"But-" I tried to say, but Cobalt interrupted me.
"It isn't worth it, just promise me, you won't get yourself hurt," Cobalt said with a hint of melancholy. His deep blue eyes now looked glassy, I couldn't help myself, he shouldn't have to deal with Bonnie or take the blame for all of this

Finally, almost the end of the day! I can't help, but wonder, what my friend's schedules look like, Monty and I had Botany together, which is a new and interesting class with Ms. Zen where we learn about the biology of plants, I actually found it interesting. Now it's 6th hour, Mr. Lupin, Cobalt's dad was going to be my teacher, Cobalt had told me earlier that he was in this class last year, so I don't expect to see him here at all.
I entered my classroom and at the front I noticed on the chalkboard it read: "All students check the seating chart." So, I guess I can't pick my own seat in this class. I glanced around and saw a few other students in the classroom. I noticed a brown dog, that same mouse that sits next to Bonnie in homeroom and at lunch, along with that tiger, and a whole zoo of animals. I didn't see Mr. Lupin anywhere in the classroom or at the doorway, I'm wondering if he's even going to show up at all. That's when my phone buzzed and the intercom rang.
The lady on the intercom spoke, "May Tora Caspian come down to the main office please."
I watched as many intimidated and suspicious eyes followed that large tiger until he left the room. The bell rang and all of us found our spots respectively. I sat down next to that mouse, her name is Midge, she has a short brown bob and blue eyes. She doesn't seem to be super interested right now considering that her and everyone else in the classroom are all on their phone. I decided to check my phone.

    -Cobalt joined the conversation-
Cobalt: 1:42 "Can't wait to leave this place, in detention for getting in a fight, dad is soooo going to kill me."
    -Monty joined the conversation-
Monty: 1:45 "Couldn't wait until passing period to send that."
Cobalt: 1:46 "Well, now its passing period so be happy, I wonder if Mac knows we put them in a group chat."
Monty: 1:48 "Just got sent a video of the fight dude, you are deader than a zombie!"
Cobalt: 1:49 "I know man dad is going to kill me." Cobalt sent a GIF
Monty: 1:50 "HAHA LOL BEST MOVIE EVER. Anyway, got to pay attention."
    -Conversation ended-

Cobalt got in a fight!? I take it Mr. Lupin is going to be a little late coming back to class. I took out my notebook and jotted down some notes about some of my other teachers.
Mr Lupin: English 101 teacher, Cobalt's dad. Nice?
I guess I'll wait here for a while until our teacher comes back.

Comments

  1. Honestly I was pretty sure Cobalt's Dad was a villain as soon as the first fact we were introduced to about his classroom is that it has assigned seating. In a school setting, there is no quicker narrative shorthand for "oppressive" and "authoritarian" than assigned seating.
